Printed on the back of this stereograph is A.T. Worden's verse "The Gooseville Christmas-tree," which sets the scene before the viewer looks at the front. George Barker, the Niagara Falls photographer named on the card, was known mainly for views of the falls, but by the late 1880s he was also issuing staged scenes of everyday life like this one. Stereographs were viewed through a stereoscope, which merged two slightly offset photographs into one image with depth, and cozy parlor scenes of children with a Christmas tree were popular for home viewing during the holidays. The card was also registered for copyright, a step publishers took to protect their work from being copied.
