Viewed from the valley above Gossensass (today Colle Isarco), this albumen print shows the Pfitscher glaciers rising in the distance beyond the tracks. The Brenner line, completed in 1867, linked Innsbruck with Italy over the pass and turned a slow crossing of the Alps into a train journey. The print is one page of an album whose other entries are named for cities such as Prague, Munich and Dresden, which suggests a traveler recording a rail route across Central Europe. The frame sets the railway against the mountains, so engineering and wilderness appear side by side.
