The crowd in this 1915 view gathered in Bayonne, New Jersey, during a walkout by street railway workers, a scene that makes the strike's public side visible. Street railway labor disputes were common in American cities in the 1910s, when motormen and conductors pressed for better wages and working conditions, and strikes could halt a city's daily commute. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs were made to be sold to newspapers and magazines. The negative has deteriorated, so fine detail in the faces and street may be softened.
