A railroad arch spanning Main Street gives this view of Springfield, Massachusetts, its particular interest, with the stone span framing the roadway below. The picture dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was making large-format views of American towns and cities for sale. Bridges that carried trains over busy streets were a common feature of growing cities, since railroads built them to separate rail and road traffic. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress in 1949.
