This print shows the U.S. Army's Punitive Expedition into northern Mexico, launched in March 1916 to pursue Pancho Villa after his raid on Columbus, New Mexico. Under Brig. Gen. John J. Pershing, the force pushed deep into Chihuahua, where supply lines stretched across rough country. The campaign is often remembered for testing motor trucks in the field. Underwood & Underwood, the firm credited on the print, distributed news photographs widely, and the caption card's details are unverified, so the exact date and setting deserve some caution.
