Bill Zorach, the painter and sculptor better known as William Zorach, is shown here walking beneath a towering tree, with the scale of the trunk dwarfing him. His note on the back of the print explains the trip: he hiked some 40 miles with a 60-pound pack of sketching materials to reach the big sequoias, hoping to feel the country as the first explorers had. The journey reflects the wilderness-minded travel of the early 1920s, when artists and writers were drawn to Yosemite and its groves as a way of connecting with the American landscape.
