A storekeeper's cottage in Faga Togo, a village on Tutuila, the largest island in American Samoa, is the subject of this glass negative. The United States took control of Tutuila in 1900, when a naval station was set up at nearby Pago Pago, and small village shops like this one served Samoan families as well as the American officials and sailors who arrived afterward. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs, gathered views from many distant places. The date and photographer are not recorded, so the picture is best read as a general glimpse of everyday commercial life in the territory in the early twentieth century.
