Captioned *Carnegie in Berlin*, this glass negative likely shows the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, though the title comes from unverified data the Bain News Service noted on its negatives or caption cards. Carnegie, a Scottish-born American who gave much of his fortune to libraries and peace causes, made repeated trips to Europe in the early twentieth century, so a Berlin visit fits that pattern. The Bain agency, based in New York, supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines from the early 1900s into the 1920s, so plates like this were made for fast publication. Treat the identification and date as provisional until better evidence turns up.
