Fagatogo, the village on the south shore of Tutuila in American Samoa, is the setting for this view of a dredge working at a new wharf. The United States Navy administered the islands from the early 1900s, and harbor work such as dredging and wharf building was central to making Pago Pago a coaling and supply station for ships crossing the Pacific. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose glass negatives record a wide range of news and events. The place name and date come from unverified caption information, so the exact year of the work is uncertain.
