A uniformed Berlin mail carrier making a delivery is the subject of this glass negative, one of the German street scenes that the Bain News Service sent out to American newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified notes written by the agency, so the exact day and the carrier's identity remain unknown. Postal workers of that era were a familiar part of city life, walking set routes to bring letters and parcels to households and businesses. The glass plate format, typical of the period, shows how news photographers recorded everyday urban work before the wider use of film.
