The record associates this glass negative with Iwao Oyama, though the cataloguers note that the name comes from an unverified caption card, so the identification should be read with that caveat. Oyama was a Japanese field marshal who commanded Japanese forces in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, including the Battle of Mukden. The image is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, when portraits of foreign military leaders were in steady demand.
