Prince Oyama, whom the caption identifies as the Japanese field marshal and elder statesman Oyama Iwao, appears here with his mother and wife at what the record describes as his father's funeral. The title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, recorded without independent verification, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain. Oyama led Japanese armies in the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars and rose to prominence in the Meiji era, which makes a family mourning portrait an unusually private view of a public figure. The image survives as a small glass negative, a format common to Bain's work.
