This glass negative records a funeral held at the Capitol for Admiral George Dewey, whose victory at Manila Bay in 1898 made him one of the best-known naval officers of the Spanish-American War. The catalog record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied that has not been verified, so the exact occasion is open to question. Bain's agency sold news pictures to newspapers across the country, so the image shows how a national event of the period was pictured for a mass audience.
