Bayonne, New Jersey, an industrial city across the Hudson River from Staten Island, is the place this glass negative names, with the subject given only as "Strikers." The Library of Congress record carries no date, and the title comes from the Bain News Service's own notes, which were never fully verified. The Bain agency, based in New York from about 1900 into the 1920s, sold news photographs of labor disputes, street scenes and public events to newspapers, so the negative most likely comes from that period. Labor unrest in Bayonne's refineries and factories during the early twentieth century makes the subject plausible, though the image itself does not show which dispute it records.
