Thamar Karsavina is the dancer named in this portrait, one of the leading ballerinas of the early twentieth century. She trained at the Imperial theater School in St. Petersburg and later became a principal with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, where she created the title role in Michel Fokine's *The Firebird* in 1910 and partnered Vaslav Nijinsky. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, documented touring performers and stage celebrities during these years. The record gives no firm date, and the identification comes from unverified caption data, so the exact moment of the dance is uncertain.
