This glass negative is catalogued under the name of Tamara Karsavina, a Russian-born ballerina who rose to prominence with the Ballets Russes in Paris before the First World War. She created the title role in Michel Fokine's *The Firebird* in 1910 and was known for her lyrical, precise style. The record gives no firm date, and the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives, so the identification has not been independently verified. The Bain agency, based in New York, sold photographs of performers, politicians and news events in the early twentieth century, and its dance portraits show how stage artists were presented to American audiences of that era.
