A man identified as R. Epstein sits at a desk, though the Library of Congress notes that the name comes from unverified caption information the Bain News Service recorded on the glass negative. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, assembled by a New York news photo agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass plate format, common before flexible film took over, is one reason the collection is valued as a record of working life and press photography from those years.
