Annette Kellerman, the Australian swimmer and vaudeville performer, is the subject of this glass negative, one of many portraits the Bain News Service produced of stage and sporting figures in the early twentieth century. Kellerman became famous for long-distance swimming and for an aquatic act that scandalized audiences in the United States, and she later appeared in films. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold images like this one to newspapers, so the negative reflects the press demand for recognizable celebrities of the era. The record offers no date, so the exact year of the exposure is unknown.
