Nine years after Congress set aside Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872, this 1881 map shows a region that was still being surveyed and named. Mapping of the Yellowstone plateau in the 1870s came largely from government expeditions, especially the Hayden Survey, whose geologists and artists recorded the geysers, lakes, and canyons for an eastern public that had only heard secondhand accounts. Maps from this period are worth studying for how they balance scientific measurement with the wonder the park's features inspired.
