Rather than a flat survey, this map shows Yellowstone from an angled, elevated viewpoint, so lakes, mountains and geyser basins appear as a traveler might glimpse them from a height. Congress set the land aside in 1872 as the first national park, and maps like this grew popular in the following decades, when railroads and tourist companies wanted to show its scale and famous attractions. Pictorial views were meant to persuade as much as inform, presenting features such as Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone as one connected destination. The small labels and vignettes show which sights promoters considered worth featuring.
