The first geological survey of Yellowstone was a map drawn in 1878, when the region was still new to the outside world. Yellowstone had been set aside as a national park only six years earlier, in 1872, so mapping its geology was part of an effort to understand what the government had just protected. Surveyors of the period used such maps to record hot springs, volcanic rock, and the layered terrain that drew early expeditions to the plateau. Its color-coded rock units show how much of the park's landscape is shaped by ancient volcanic activity.
