Here, the title points to the informal trade that sprang up along picket lines, where Union and Confederate soldiers stationed close enough to talk often swapped coffee, tobacco, newspapers, and other goods. The drawing belongs to a series of Civil War army life studies made in the decade after the war, and the record names both Union and Confederate personnel, which underscores that the exchange crossed the battle lines. Such truces were usually unofficial and sometimes forbidden by commanders, yet they reveal how much daily contact existed between enemies who shared the same hardships.
