Few buildings in Washington are as closely tied to American scholarship as the Library of Congress, and this glass negative, dated to about 1925, shows it during a period when the institution had long outgrown its earlier quarters in the Capitol. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, produced many views of the capital's public buildings for visitors and publishers. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the day, and the streaks and blemishes that may appear on the original come from the natural deterioration of its coatings over time. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library in 1947.
