Its record describes a view of book deposits in a basement at the Library of Congress, a glimpse of the storage work behind the reading rooms. The Library's collections had grown well beyond its shelving by the 1910s, which pushed material into lower floors and annexes. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in those years, documented the city's government buildings and interiors. The negative is dated only to between 1909 and 1920, and its glass coating shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration, a common condition in negatives of this age.
