Basement-level rooms rarely get attention, yet this plan of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., shows how the lowest floor was laid out beneath the public spaces above. Drawn in color ink, watercolor, wash, and graphite, it comes from the architectural and engineering drawings held by the Prints and Photographs Division. Plans like this recorded service areas, storage, and mechanical spaces that supported a collection growing rapidly in the late 1800s. The Jefferson Building, which the library occupied after opening in 1897, was the product of decades of planning, and working drawings like this one reveal how much coordination its scale demanded.
