The poster's subject is the transatlantic route itself, with the Statue of Liberty as its landmark: a Rotterdam-to-New York sailing that called at Boulogne-sur-Mer and Southampton before reaching the harbor. Holland-America Line ran passenger service on this route for decades, and after World War II it carried many emigrants and tourists who would have seen the statue as the first sight of America. Amsterdam printer L. van Leer & Co. produced the lithograph around 1950, when Dutch travel posters often used bold flat color and simplified maps to sell the crossing as an adventure.
