Its title, "The very professional underground politico," frames the subject as a skilled operator working out of sight, a idea that fit the Watergate story closely. Green signed the drawing, and it was published on October 29, 1972, alongside two articles asking how the scandal compared with earlier foul play in presidential campaigns and how far it reached into the administration of President Richard Nixon. Drawn in black ink, felt-tip pen and opaque white on ivory paper, the piece belonged to the editorial cartoon tradition, which used pointed images like this to comment on political misconduct during an election year.
