Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the setting here, and the scene ties Robert E. Lee to one of the Civil War's most lopsided battles. In December 1862, Union forces under Ambrose Burnside repeatedly attacked Confederate positions on the heights above the town, and Lee's army held its ground while inflicting heavy losses. This line reproduction appeared as an illustration in John Esten Cooke's biography of Lee, reissued in New York in 1899 by G.W. Dillingham, which helped shape how a late-century audience remembered the general and his campaigns.
