Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on brown paper, this sheet shows the town of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on the Rappahannock River in December 1862, and it joins a companion sheet to form a continuous panorama. The army artist Alfred Waud made the drawing during the weeks after the battle fought there from December 11 to 15, when Union forces under Ambrose Burnside failed to break the Confederate line on the heights behind the town. *Harper's Weekly* printed the view across two pages on December 20, 1862, giving readers a wide look at the ground where the fighting had taken place. The subjects noted in the record, including artillery, fortifications and officers, reflect the military presence that filled the town.
