Titled "Bebitera," this gouache is one of the few works in the set that ties its figure to a Balinese name rather than a generic scene. Its catalog subjects point to dress and ritual, so the painting likely shows a figure in ceremonial clothing, with the layered textiles and ornament that Balinese ceremonial life demanded. Gouache paintings of Bali were widely produced between the 1930s and 1950s, when artists, many working with European visitors and collectors, documented island customs for an outside audience. Viewers today often read such works as records of dress and ritual at a time of rapid change in the island's arts.
