Joan Miró's clenched fist, printed in Paris in 1937, is paired with a statement from the artist that sets this poster apart. He contrasts the outdated forces of fascism with the creative energy of the Spanish people, whom he expects to give Spain a momentum that will astonish the world. Issued during the Spanish Civil War, which pitted the Republic against Francisco Franco's Nationalists from 1936 to 1939, such posters rallied international sympathy for the Republic. The flat, saturated color of the pochoir stencil process gives the fist its bold, graphic force.
