Titled *Fabric* and dated 1940, this lithograph by Lamar Baker takes its name from cloth, and its record links it to cotton, sharecropping and prisons. Those subjects tie the print to the Southern cotton economy of the period, when tenant farmers and sharecroppers depended on a single crop and debt often bound them to the land. Realist printmakers of the 1930s and 1940s used such scenes to press viewers to confront rural labor and hardship. The print's pencil signature and its stone inscription, LB40, show that it was pulled as an original lithograph rather than a reproduction.
