This publicity portrait shows P.D. James, the British writer who became one of the best-known crime novelists of the twentieth century. Her first mystery, *Cover Her Face*, appeared in the early 1960s, and her later detective, Adam Dalgliesh, a poet turned police inspector, gave her a long run of novels. She had spent years in the British civil service before writing full time, a background that informed the procedural detail in her books. Portraits like this one were typically circulated by publishers and the press to introduce authors to readers and reviewers.
