Rather than a direct view of the cosmonaut, this print shows a television screen carrying a head-and-shoulders portrait of Valentina Tereshkova in her flight suit, taken during her fifth orbit. In June 1963 she piloted Vostok 6, becoming the first woman to fly in space, and Soviet broadcasts of her flight were widely seen. Photographing a screen was a common way to record such televised moments, when live images from space reached the public through the television set in the home or the newsroom.
