Aung San, the Burmese independence leader, appears here in a head-and-shoulders portrait in military uniform, a format that suited the image of a national commander he was then building. The record dates the print to 1947, the year he was preparing Burma's push toward independence from Britain. That same year he was assassinated, six months before the country gained independence on January 4, 1948, so the portrait captures him at the close of his public career. He is remembered in Myanmar as the father of the nation, and his face became one of the most recognized in the country's modern history.
