Few liners of the period matched the Olympic in size, and this view of her first-class dining saloon, captioned as seating 500, shows how the White Star ship offered the polish of a grand hotel at sea. Completed in 1911, she sailed the Southampton to New York route, and her public rooms were built to rival the finest restaurants ashore, with ornate paneling and long tables set for formal meals. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs that documents the era's ocean travel and its notable ships.
