This engraving focuses on the portico of the Parthenon, with its columns, moldings, and relief figures laid out for close study. The record dates it loosely to between 1750 and 1799, a period when European travelers and architects were first publishing measured views of Athens. Stuart and Revett's *Antiquities of Athens*, issued from 1762, helped make such plates a standard reference for Greek design. The Parthenon dates from the 440s BC, and the sculptures shown here were still on the building when this print was made, before Lord Elgin's removals in the early 1800s.
