Two ragged children stand outside a saloon, and the words "Daddy's in there" frame the scene as a message about what drink costs a family. The broadside pairs a drawing by an artist identified only as C.B. with a poem by Julia H. Johnson, and it was issued by the American Issue Publishing Company, the press of the Anti-Saloon League in Westerville, Ohio. Dated to about 1917, it appeared as the temperance campaign was gaining ground and before national Prohibition took effect in 1920. Such broadsides were printed in large numbers and passed out to rally support for closing saloons.
