The title, "The Overshadowing Curse," casts the licensed saloon as a dark shadow falling over everything beneath it, a metaphor typical of the moral reform campaigns of the late nineteenth century. Temperance groups and their allies used lithographs like this one, which could be reproduced cheaply and displayed in meeting halls, newspapers, and homes, to argue that liquor licensing made drunkenness and its harms a public responsibility. The caption card does not record a date, but the allegorical style places it within that broader debate over whether saloons should be legal at all. Viewers today can read it as both a piece of political persuasion and a record of how reformers pictured the saloon's place in American towns.
