The grand saloon of the Atlantic, shown in this engraving, was the central social room of a steamship of the late 1840s. Saloons like this one, with long dining tables, ornamented ceilings, and carefully arranged seating, were where passengers spent much of an ocean crossing. The view appeared in *The Illustrated London News* in May 1850, when steam packets were carrying travelers and mail across the Atlantic at a growing pace. The record's caption details are unverified, but the scene shows how ocean liners presented comfort and display to their passengers.
