Herman Roeg's 1918 color lithograph asks American viewers to help the Red Cross during the final months of the First World War, a campaign the organization ran to raise money for relief work at home and overseas. The poster is an example of the wartime appeal, which relied on emotional images of nurses and the wounded to persuade civilians that giving was a direct form of service. Its subjects, which include nurses and war casualties, reflect how the Red Cross tied fundraising to the medical and human costs of the conflict. The printed size, roughly 70 by 48 centimeters, was typical of the large posters that were pasted on streets and in shop windows during these drives.
