Its slogan, "America's answer to humanity's challenge," sits beside the Red Cross emblem and frames joining the organization as a national duty. Printed in New York in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, the poster belongs to the wartime push to enlist members and volunteers for the American Red Cross. The subject index also lists nurses, reflecting how central nursing work was to the organization's wartime mission. Its color lithography was a common and affordable method for mass-circulated recruiting posters of the period.
