Few wartime posters drew on scripture as directly as this one, which brings the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation into an appeal to join the American Red Cross. Printed in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it belongs to a wave of recruiting posters as the organization's membership grew and its nursing and relief work expanded. The lithograph was produced by Cornelius Hicks of the American Lithographic Company in New York, and its attention to nurses reflects how central trained women were to the Red Cross effort.
