Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1775 was a small farming town of scattered houses, a meetinghouse, and an open green, about ten miles northwest of Boston. Its residents raised crops and livestock, and its trade ran along the roads linking Boston with the interior towns. Tensions with the Crown had built for years, and the town's militia companies drilled on the green as British troops moved out of Boston. Just before sunrise on April 19, 1775, a company of militia under Captain John Parker stood on the Common when British regulars arrived on their march toward Concord. Shots were exchanged, and eight militiamen were killed. The fight at Lexington opened the day's fighting, and the town became known across the colonies as the place where the war began.
