Concord, Massachusetts, was a farming town of mills and meetinghouses about twenty miles west of Boston when its name entered the war on April 19, 1775. British regulars marched out from Boston that night to seize militia supplies stored there, and at the North Bridge they met armed colonists who had gathered from Concord and nearby towns. When shots were exchanged at the bridge, the regulars pulled back into town and then began a long retreat toward Boston, harried by militia along the road. The fighting followed the morning clash at Lexington and showed residents across the countryside that the dispute with Britain had turned to bloodshed. The North Bridge later became a lasting symbol of the Revolution.
