Lexington, Massachusetts, was a small farming town on the road between Boston and Concord in April 1775, where most residents made their living from grain, livestock, and modest trades. Years of quarrels with the royal government in Boston had left the countryside wary of British troops. On April 19, a column of regulars marched out to seize colonial military stores at Concord, and militia gathered on Lexington green before dawn. Shots were fired on the green, and eight Americans died there. The British then pushed on to Concord and began their return march to Boston, harried by militia firing from houses, fields, and stone walls, until a relief force under Lord Percy reached them in Lexington. The day's fighting opened the war that the town's residents would live through for the next eight years.
