Its title places the scene in the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, where in July 1778 Loyalist rangers and their Native allies attacked colonial settlers and militia. Felix O.C. Darley, a prolific American illustrator, painted the original, and this halftone reproduction was copyrighted by John D. Morris & Co. around 1905, a date noted on an unverified caption card. The episode gained lasting fame through Thomas Campbell's 1809 poem *Gertrude of Wyoming*, which helped shape how later Americans remembered it. Halftone printing like this let publishers spread such paintings widely in books and magazines.
