The most distinctive detail is the Latinized inscription, *Edmundus Halleius*, which renders the astronomer Edmond Halley's name in the scholarly form common in his era. Halley (1656–1742) is remembered for computing the orbit of the comet that bears his name, for serving as Astronomer Royal, and for encouraging Isaac Newton to publish the *Principia*. This print is a halftone reproduction of an older engraving, published in *Correspondence and Papers of Edmond Halley* opposite page 284. The original engraving's date and maker are not recorded, so the image is best read as a later printed copy of an earlier portrait.
