The title, *Los Dos Bandidos* ("The Two Bandits"), casts its subjects as outlaws, though the caption card that dates the print to between 1911 and 1914 is unverified. Those years were turbulent in Mexico, where the revolution that began in 1910 drew armed rebels, local fighters and ordinary criminals into the countryside, and officials and newspapers often applied the word *bandido* to revolutionaries as well as robbers. A portrait with this title therefore reflects both the men pictured and the label others gave them. Viewers should treat the title as a period caption rather than a confirmed identification of the subjects or their activities.
