This photographic print reproduces a painting that presents itself as a self-portrait of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the 17th-century Mexican nun, poet, and scholar who lived and wrote at the convent of San Jerónimo in Mexico City. Her wide learning and her poems and prose made her one of the most celebrated writers of colonial New Spain, and a painted likeness of her would have carried weight in that world. The caption card does not record a date for the print, and the attribution of the original canvas to her hand is traditional rather than firmly documented. Viewers interested in the image may want to compare it with other portraits of the poet and with the scholarship on colonial Mexican painting.
